Mid-century modern chairs and seating include vintage dining chairs, Danish armchairs, lounges, daybeds, and retro bar stools. Made in teak, rosewood, oak and blackwood, these pieces were designed for every room of the home — from the dining room and living room to kitchens and home bars. Functional and well-proportioned, they remain some of the most collected examples of mid-century furniture today.
Mid-century dining chairs
Our mid-century dining chair collection includes pieces from Australian furniture makers such as Parker, including the Nordic dining chair and the model #107 matchstick chair. Other notable mid-century dining chair designs came from Danish Deluxe, T.H. Brown, and Chiswell. T.H. Brown also manufactured Danish designs under licence, including designs by Arne Vodder, and Johannes Andersen’s Juliane chair. Alongside these sit classic Danish dining chairs by H.W Klein Skovby, Henning Kjærnulf and many others.
Retro bar stools
In the kitchen, retro bar stools became a mid-century staple. Parker produced a sought after design with a padded seat in vinyl or wool. But none are more recognisable than the T.H. Brown's Martelle stools and Danish bar stools. These pieces were so popular they are now back in production.
Mid-century armchairs
Mid-century armchairs remain equally collectible. Australian furniture makers produced a range of designs including high-back armchairs, low-back armchairs, recliners and rocking chairs. Coveted pieces include the Narvik armchair designed by Fred Lowen for Fler, the Danish Deluxe Inga armchair and Parker’s blackwood armchairs with rattan backs, including models #110 and #155. The Parker ConversationChair remains one of the most sought-after. Scandinavian and Danish armchairs brought further variety, with notable designs such as Kai Kristiansen's Paper Knife chair and Grete Jalk's model #128, produced by France & Son, Denmark.
Mid-century daybeds and click-clack sofa beds
Seating was often designed to be multifunctional, making the most of smaller spaces. The click-clack sofa bed was a hallmark of the mid-century period, transforming from a stylish lounge into a spare bed in one easy movement. Daybeds served the same role — elegant enough for everyday living, but functional enough to double as guest beds when needed.
This collection of mid-century modern chairs and seating brings together dining chairs, armchairs, retro bar stools, lounges, daybeds, office chairs and occasional chairs from both Australian, English and Scandinavian makers. Each piece reflects the balance of practicality and design that defines mid-century furniture.
