Sydney mid-century furniture design
In Sydney, Parker set the standard for mid-century furniture, with its large collection of dining tables and chairs, its coveted cat-eye and lip-handle sideboards, teak coffee tables and blackwood armchairs and lounge suits. Chiswell also became a household name, producing dining chairs, tables, sideboards, wall units, and cocktail cabinets sold through major department stores such as Grace Brothers. Other Sydney makers included Berryman, Kalmar, and Wrightbilt.
Mid-century modern furniture in Melbourne
Melbourne produced some of Australia’s best-known mid-century modern furniture. Fler Furniture, founded by Fred Lowen and Ernest Rodeck, introduced the Narvik lounge and armchairs, designs that remain highly regarded today. Lowen later established Tessa, known for its leather lounge chairs, sofas and smoked glass coffee tables. Danish De Luxe (Huntingdale) specialised in teak dining chairs and tables, along with lounge suites such as the Inga and Rifka ranges. Hayson Furniture, designed by Cliff Hayton, created Danish-influenced bedroom and dining furniture.
Adelaide’s mid-century furniture makers
In Adelaide, the most popular mid-century furniture designers were TH Brown, makers of retro bar stools, dining chairs, and coffee tables including the Rondo, Aquarius, and Venus. Noblett manufactured dining tables, sideboards, bookcases, and wall units in teak and blackbean. Macrob is another mid-century designer from Adelaide that became well known for its wall units and sideboards.
Mid-century furniture icons from Brisbane
Brisbane’s mid-century modern furniture movement was led by Danish Quality Furniture (DQF), which often worked in blackbean to produce dining chairs and lounge suites with a strong Danish influence. Don Rex was another Brisbane maker, known for finely sculpted armchairs and lounges.
These works of Australian vintage furniture combined local timbers with clear, functional design and remain sought out as authentic examples of mid-century furniture made across Australia.
