Fler Furniture

Fler, an influential Australian maker of mid-century modern furniture, was established in the 1940s by Fred Lowen and Ernest Rodeck. Fler played a key role in shaping Australian furniture design through the 1950s and 1960s with a range that included lounges, armchairs, dining sets and occasional pieces influenced by Scandinavian form and proportion. Fler remains recognised among collectors of mid-century modern and Australian vintage furniture. 

Iconic Fler seating and lounges

Fler’s seating includes a number of well-regarded designs such as the Fler Narvik armchair and lounge, often crafted from solid Tasmanian blackwood with distinctive frame curves and rattan detailing on the click-clack sofa bed. These pieces pair sculptural form with daily usability and remain sought-after examples of Australian mid-century modern furniture.  

Fler 64 dining room furniture

The Fler 64 dining room range brought together dining tables, dining chairs and matching sideboards in teak veneers. Sets featuring Fler 64 dining chairs and extendable tables are found alongside Fler 64 sideboards that combine storage with the clean lines characteristic of mid-century modern design.  

Other mid-century furniture in this collection

Alongside seating and dining pieces, this collection can include coffee tables, stools and occasional pieces attributed to Fler’s output in the 1950s–1970s. Fler also produced solid myrtle furniture, including bedroom furniture such as bedside tables and dressers, as well as buffets, sideboards and drawers. Each demonstrates how mid-century modern furniture combines practical proportion with material focus, frequently in teak veneers, solid blackwood and myrtle.
