Mid-century desks and writing desks

Desks were central to mid-century office design and were often intended to sit freely within a room. Mid-century desks by Danish makers such as Arne Vodder, Gunni Omann and Dyrlund were frequently double-sided, with drawers and shelving accessible from both sides. 

Smaller spaces were catered to with secretaires, also known as writing bureaus or writing desks. Australian and Scandinavian furniture makers produced countless variations — compact writing desks with storage above and below, and some even doubling as dressing tables. 

Office storage, bookcases and wall units

Mid-century office storage was designed as part of an integrated system rather than as separate pieces. Scandinavian wall units often combined bookcases, cabinets and fold-down desks within a single structure, allowing workspaces to be closed away when not in use. Filing cabinets, shelving and modular storage played an important role in keeping work areas organised while maintaining visual order.
