A collection of mid-century modern bedroom furniture, including bedside tables, drawers, tallboys, dressers, dressing tables and bedheads produced from the 1950s to 1970s. Unlike today’s flatpack bedroom furniture, pieces from this era were built to last, with careful attention to proportion, storage and durability. Like most furniture from the mid-century era, bedroom furniture was both beautiful and functional.
Australian mid-century bedroom furniture
Australian makers produced some of the most recognisable bedroom furniture of the era. Parker Furniture, designed and manufactured in Sydney, is represented through the Nordic range by Tony Parker, including bedside tables, tallboys and dressers that remain widely collected. In Melbourne, Hans Hayson designed Danish-inspired bedroom suites featuring recessed handles and restrained detailing. Other Australian makers such as Fler and Berryman also produced well-regarded bedroom furniture, much of it still in use today.
Scandinavian and danish bedroom furniture
From Denmark came smaller-scale designs with more refined detailing. Designers like Johannes Andersen and Kai Kristiansen produced bedside tables, dressers, and tallboys in rosewood, oak and teak, often with proportions that suited compact homes. Their work showed a level of precision that set it apart, while still keeping to the mid-century ethos of everyday usability.
